TASER Used on Suspected Drunk Driver

April 7, 2006

An Auburn Hills officer stopped a suspected intoxicated driver in the area of Auburn and Adams Rd. at approximately 1:47am today's date. The officer had seen the driver stop and then wait at a flashing yellow traffic signal at Auburn and Squirrel Rd.

The driver, a 29 year old Detroit resident, quickly exited his vehicle, a 97 Dodge Caravan, and fled south on Adams Rd. The officer gave chase of foot and warned the driver that the TASER would be deployed if he continued to flee. The driver ignored the officer's directions to stop running. The officer deployed his TASER and struck the driver in the back. An automatic 5 second shock was delivered to the resisting driver. The driver immediately stopped and fell to the ground. After the shock was administered the driver complied with all orders from the officer and he was taken into custody. The driver did not suffer any injuries as a result of the TASER.

The driver refused to submit to a chemical breath test, but the officer could smell alcohol on his breath. The officer obtained a search warrant for the driver's blood to test for the presence of alcohol. The driver's license is currently suspended and he has 5 prior convictions for driving on a suspended license and 1 conviction for operating while impaired. The subject was lodged at the Oakland County jail.
