Suspect Charged in Accidental Shooting
Marcus Jun-Mon Yu, 21 years old, of South Lyon has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Karl Joseph Hansen, 21 years old, of Pinckney. Yu was arraigned on the charge today at 52/3 District Court in Rochester Hills. Magistrate Soma set a $50,000 personal bond. Involuntary manslaughter is a 15 year felony with a fine up to $7,500. An alternate charge of careless discharge of a firearm causing death, a two year misdemeanor, is also listed on the warrant.
The shooting occurred at 2:32 a.m. on June 30, 2007. Yu and Hansen, close friends and both engineering students at Kettering University in Flint, were attending a party in the 2600 block of Beacon Hill in Auburn Hills. Yu was handling a handgun that belonged to a resident of the apartment where the shooting occurred. The owner of the firearm was sleeping and unaware that Yu was handling the weapon. The weapon discharged striking Hansen, who was sleeping near by, in the head. Hansen died at the scene. Yu remained at the scene until officers arrived and he has cooperated with the investigation. No one else was injured in the incident.
A pre-exam conference was set for July 11, 2007 at 8:30 a.m. at the 52/3 District Court.
The families of the victim and suspect have asked for privacy while they deal with this tragedy.
